Child and Spousal Support Mediation

Child and Spousal Support Mediation in Ontario

Support discussions can be difficult when you are also adjusting to separate households. Questions about income, children's expenses and monthly commitments may feel urgent, especially when you do not yet share the same understanding of the numbers. Forward Family Mediation provides a structured setting to discuss those questions and explore next steps.

Begin with clear financial information

A productive financial discussion needs more than estimates. Both participants need to share relevant information openly so that proposals can be considered on an informed basis. During intake and preparation, we discuss the information required for the issues you want to address.

Depending on your circumstances, that may include income records, tax information, details of children's expenses and existing support agreements or orders. Self-employment, variable earnings or incomplete records may require additional work and advice. Tell us about gaps before the session so they can be addressed.

A mediator can organize the discussion and identify missing information. Your own lawyer provides advice about disclosure obligations, support entitlement and the legal effect of a proposed arrangement. Financial or tax professionals may also be needed where specialist advice is required.

Discussing child support and additional expenses

Parents may need to work through questions about income information, support payments and particular expenses for their children. Child support is subject to applicable legal rules. Mediation is not a way to avoid those obligations or trade away a child's interests.

Shared expenses can generate practical questions even when parents agree in principle. How will an expense be raised? What information will be provided? When will receipts be shared? How will a proposed activity be discussed? Making these expectations clearer can help you assess a proposal before it becomes a recurring source of disagreement.

We can also help you see where financial arrangements interact with a parenting plan, while keeping the legal and practical purpose of each discussion clear.

Discussing spousal support

Spousal support can involve different questions from child support. Participants may want to discuss whether support is payable, possible arrangements, changes in circumstances or how an existing arrangement is being understood. These discussions require legal advice tailored to your situation.

Laura remains neutral. She does not decide entitlement, determine what a court would order or provide either participant with legal advice. Mediation creates space to understand the concerns, consider information and explore proposals for each person to review with their lawyer.

If housing, assets or debts are also involved, our property division mediation page explains how those connected discussions can be approached.

What to expect from the mediation process

You meet separately with Laura for intake and suitability screening. This includes discussion of safety concerns, pressure or other factors that could affect participation. If mediation is appropriate, the scope, fees and meeting arrangements are discussed before work proceeds.

Sessions focus on the questions you need to address. The mediator helps you work through the available information, clarify proposals and record any understandings. You may need time between sessions to gather information or obtain independent legal advice. Virtual appointments across Ontario let participants join from separate private spaces.

Laura's background includes more than 20 years as a family law clerk, alongside her accreditation and mediation training. Learn more about Laura and the approach she brings to family mediation.

Review before you finalize

A mediation summary gives you a record of the discussions and any understandings reached. It does not automatically change an existing agreement or court order. Each participant should obtain advice from their own lawyer before signing terms or changing legal obligations.

If you need help arranging information for legal review, ask about administrative document support. Forward Family Mediation does not provide legal drafting, representation, financial planning or tax advice.

Common questions about support mediation

Can we mediate if we disagree about income

That concern can be raised during intake. Missing or disputed information may need to be addressed before meaningful negotiations can occur. Mediation cannot replace the need for reliable disclosure or compel a person to cooperate.

Who pays for mediation

Ask about fees and payment arrangements before you begin. Do not assume that all costs are included in a package or divided in a particular way. Your legal advice and any specialist services are separate considerations.

Can mediation address a change in support

You can ask about discussing changed circumstances. Bring the existing agreement or order and speak with your lawyer about the appropriate process. An informal conversation or mediation summary should not be treated as an automatic legal change.
